How Do You Know When It’s Time to Replace Tires?
On average, most tires will give you anywhere from 50,000 to 70,000 miles of use. If you’re driving 12,000 miles a year (which is today considered to be the norm), then you could reasonably expect four to almost six years out of your tires.
Of course, if you live in an area where the weather is extreme, either with high heat or freezing cold, the compounds in your tires might wear down faster. Bumpy roads can cause as much damage.
However, if you stay up to date on all your routine maintenance, you should be able to combat most wear. For example, if you were to get a tire rotation with each oil change and had a wheel alignment performed every couple of years, you should get more life out of your set.
Tread Depth Is Everything
The main reason why we need to replace tires is because the tread wears down. These grooves are cut into your tires in very specific patterns to help wick away rain, snow, ice, and more. They’re what keeps wheel grip and traction high, thus heightening your safety.
Rule of thumb typically states that when the tread depth on your tires falls below 1/16th of an inch, they need to go. So, how can you tell when this is true?
First, you could buy a cheap tread depth gauge to help you measure things. However, you can also try the penny test. Just stick a penny (facing downwards) into the tread. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, the tread is too low.
Additional Signs of Tire Wear
Aside from low tread depth, there are some other obvious signs that your tires need to be replaced.
- The steering wheel is vibrating. This could be due to a bad alignment or even poor balance. However, it can ultimately signify your tires need to be replaced.
- There are cracks and cuts in the sidewalls. Either of these could cause your tires to excessively leak air.
- Your tires have bulges or blisters. Consider these to be major weak spots in your tires that could lead to blowouts. They post a serious safety hazard.
